I’ve just been looking for Latin words on the internet. I wanted to know the Latin for Mr. I now know there’s an American body builder called Mr Latin and a variety of dating sites if a Latin lover is what you think might float your boat.
I’ve been to church several times in the past few weeks. I’ve still not found god but have discovered that my love of choral music runs deeper than I had imagined. This time of year is a special service hot spot. What with Jesus arriving in Jerusalem, being tortured and murdered and coming to life again, the Christian calendar has been rammed.
During the religious bits of the services my mind does wander.
Could I teach myself Latin from the order of service I wonder? It’s printed in both Latin and English and when you see both languages side by side, it seems like it would be very easy. The words used in this religious context wouldn’t necessarily be useful in my regular day to day vocabulary. I’m working on it though, I’m adding making Latin phrases that I can use at the shops, to my list of distractions.
The church by my studio is super formal, high church, and has many ceremonial elements that I’ve never come across before. Today, the pointy hatted priest, who is a bishop apparently, was sticking things into a huge candle with a crucifix on it. A paschal candle, The friend I took along today has looked up this tradition. It was five grains of incense that were inserted into the cross, to represent the aromatic herbs used to prepare Christ’s body for the tomb. I’m glad to know the truth of it. What had come to my mind was some sort of ecumenical Mr Potato Head and I was initially disappointed that that wasn’t the case.
