I do like classical ballet. Honestly I do, but I find it hard to see the point of en pointe. It hurts, it does damage, and those blocks make such an effing racket.
It may be one of the reasons I prefer male ballet dancers parts. I know how that reads but you know what I mean, male dancers roles. Except when they are just steering a girl around in circles while she sticks one leg in the air, or lifting her up to walk half way across the stage. What is the point? You really don’t need to stand on your absolute tippy toes to impress me.
Baryshnikov impresses the hell out of me just jumping up and down on the spot in a freezing cold room.
However, being en pointe gives ballerinas lots of flashing opportunities and interestingly dramatic stances from which they can look the audience directly in the eye and silently ask, have you seen my fanny?
