No good deed goes unpunished

Was it Thomas Aquinas who said ‘no good deed goes unpunished’? Or did he say the opposite? Or was it someone else?

Whatever.

Shortly before Xmas I dropped an ikea kallax 5 by 5 shelving unit on my middle finger, right hand.

When showing it to people, I looked like I was being rude.

Having failed a fire inspection and the landlords lease not being renewed, the residents of my work studio space were given hasty marching orders.

We all had to pack really quickly, and get out. The gang pulled together, moving to a similar but safer set up. While Marmalade and I were preparing to dismantle Em’s kallax, after having dismantled mine without event, I squished my finger. The pain, the cold clammy sweat, the spinning room, all faded into insignificance when I saw the poor digit.

It looked like I’d stuck it up a plum. Huge, dark red and purple shades. I showed everyone who’d look.

3 months later and I fear my finger may never recover fully.

When the hole in the nail grows up and out it may be that no one will notice that it’s flatter and fatter than its fellow digits.

No one but me….and of course those people to whom I flip the bird.

  1. There’s a quick cure for the lasting pain of a crushed fingertip. The blackend nail is full of blood underneath, and the pressure causes pain. A red hot pin or needle pushed through the nail will bring instant relief, and often a fine spray of blood. But this has to be done soon after the injury, before the blood has a chance to clot. Be sure to disinfect the hole the needle will leave. I’ve done this more than a few times to myself, and it does relieve the pain quickly, and it doesn’t hurt.
